What is the review of proposals for new British governments on mental health?
Basically, the British government proposes all mentally ill persons will be subject to a law that says if you are mentally ill and you do not take the prescribed medication, you will automatically locked. My problem is that I have two people with Down syndrome in my family, my gran has Alzheimer's disease, one is reached Autism and I am very familiar with other relevant diseases, such as depression. Both of my cousins were with low drug for other symptoms, such as heart problems. Nothing to do with environmental issues that are associated. My Gran was taking medication in the early stages 5 years ago and felt physical pain when on it, but the doctor refused to change it. My younger cousin of autism has its problems, but is in no way violent. All these people are locked up having committed a crime and not containing the violence of the past. Even people suffering from mild depression will be locked up if they refuse to take medication without a say in the matter.
This seems to be a proposal quite unethical. The biggest "problem" is that most mental health problems (I had trouble calling or malfunction, rather than the disease) can be better helped with drug treatment. In addition to this, most studies of antidepressant drugs on show only a small difference between drug and placebo groups. It seems doubtful that a law like this pass. Forcing people to take drugs when they have no history of violence appears as a huge violation of human rights …
