A brief description of the RDI ® Program

I often receive questions from parents interested in knowing how my colleagues and I approach treatment of autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions. I thought it would be useful to begin to answer these requests in this format, some of you have similar issues. Here I will address:

What is the intervention Development of relations (RDI) ® Program?

When you begin to understand RDI ®, it is useful to put aside any previous information you have about treatment programs. My reasoning for this proposal stems from the fact that it is difficult to enter a new concept into something that we have already established in our minds. RDI ® is a unique and different, and I encourage you to consult the information outside the limits of what you currently conceptualized as a "treatment".

The RDI ® Program is based on an extensive body of research in the areas of human development, neurology and neurodevelopmental disorders (including autism). Dr. Steven Gutstein and Dr. Rachelle Sheely, the founders RDI ®, spent years studying and organizing research in these areas to develop a comprehensive approach, based on research neurodevelopmental disabilities is based on what we know how humans develop. By integrating the understanding of brain function, the typical sequence of development from birth to life, and neurological and developmental problems that occur in autism and related disorders, they were able to design an approach that takes into account the core deficits of these disorders in order to promote more typical route development. This often means returning to the beginning stages of development to address fundamental questions which impede the ability of a child to operate.

The RDI ® approach focuses on the remediation of deficits, rather than offset them. This means that we tackle the underlying deficits that prevent people from thinking, communicating, and dealing with the meaning means. We address barriers development so that they do not create obstacles for the individual and the family. This situation contrasts sharply with the treatment approaches that emphasize the acquisition of skills by heart, the academic learning and other areas that correspond to the strengths of individuals on the spectrum, but does not reach the impact of their deficits.

RDI ® Program Certified Consultants are professionally trained to help families through the process of consolidation of RDI ®. Consultants conduct periodic evaluations to determine the starting points, barriers measure progress and identify along the path. They also work closely with parents by providing education, strategies, and comments that the relationship of participation developed and guided the objectives of the child are taken into account. Just as the child is in a role guided participation with parents, parents in the role of guided participation with their advisor. The objective of the consultant is to help parents to resume their role as the best guide in the lives of children, and to help them develop the skills and mindset necessary to make the most of moments with their child throughout the day. RDI ® does not contain a specific set of activities, done in a specific place, and for a period of time. It is a lifestyle that permeates every interaction with the child, and generally with other family members as well. Parents learn to approach their child and provide opportunities for thinking, communication, and bearing in order to promote the optimal growth and development.

There is much more to say about RDI ® as a method of treatment, but the purpose of this paper is give you a basic overview.
