A brief description of the RDI ® Program
I often receive questions from parents interested in knowing how my colleagues and I approach treatment of autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions. I thought it would be useful to begin to answer these requests in this format, some of you have similar issues. Here I will address:
What is the intervention Development of relations (RDI) ® Program?
When you begin to understand RDI ®, it is useful to put aside any previous information you have about treatment programs. My reasoning for this proposal stems from the fact that it is difficult to enter a new concept into something that we have already established in our minds. RDI ® is a unique and different, and I encourage you to consult the information outside the limits of what you currently conceptualized as a "treatment".
The RDI ® Program is based on an extensive body of research in the areas of human development, neurology and neurodevelopmental disorders (including autism). Dr. Steven Gutstein and Dr. Rachelle Sheely, the founders RDI ®, spent years studying and organizing research in these areas to develop a comprehensive approach, based on research neurodevelopmental disabilities is based on what we know how humans develop. By integrating the understanding of brain function, the typical sequence of development from birth to life, and neurological and developmental problems that occur in autism and related disorders, they were able to design an approach that takes into account the core deficits of these disorders in order to promote more typical route development. Because it is based on the most current research in these areas, the RDI ® model evolves over time it takes for the light of new Search our understanding of these issues. This step is crucial because it means that RDI ® as a treatment approach remains at the forefront of what we know about these disorders.
RDI ® is to restore the relationship between parent involvement and guided the child to promote the development of thought and matter. Guided participation describes the relationship is established between the parent and the child in early childhood and continues throughout childhood and adolescence. The basic essence of the guided participation is that the mother is in continual role of guiding the child to learn and understand each other and the world around them. The child is in the role of parental guidance soak, the learning to think, communicate and interact with others. RDI ® helps parents learn to establish a solid relationship with their child's guided participation, which is the foundation from which all future learning and development occurs. It begins with a thorough assessment of the parent-child relationship to determine if failures occur in guided participation relationship. A plan is developed to strengthen the relationship and give parents the tools needed to repair failures that occur.
Once the tour participation is well established relationship between parent and child, the focus turns to the child's specific developmental deficits. RDI ® uses a comprehensive set of objectives which are developmentally sequenced all aspects of human development from birth through adolescence. The targets cover the areas of development such as abstract thinking, self-awareness, communication, behavioral and emotional regulation, friendships, problem solving, collaboration, learning school and many others. A thorough assessment process identifies gaps in development for each individual child, and a plan is developed to meet objectives of each specific area that requires attention. This often means returning to the beginning stages of development to address fundamental questions which impede the ability of a child to operate.
The RDI ® approach focuses on the remediation of deficits, rather than offset them. This means that we tackle the underlying deficits that prevent people from thinking, communicating, and dealing with the meaning means. [For more information on the concept of consolidation, see our article "What is sanitation?" following Link the resources of the author box.] Another way to think about this is that we focus on the dynamic development of intelligence which includes the thought processes and skills necessary to participate in the changing world in which we live. We address barriers development so that they do not create obstacles for the individual and the family. This situation contrasts sharply with the treatment approaches that emphasize the acquisition of skills by heart, the academic learning and other areas that correspond to the strengths of individuals on the spectrum, but does not reach the impact of their deficits.
RDI ® Program Certified Consultants are professionally trained to help families through the process of consolidation of RDI ®. Consultants conduct periodic evaluations to determine the starting points, barriers measure progress and identify along the path. They also work closely with parents by providing education, strategies, and comments that the relationship of participation developed and guided the objectives of the child are taken into account. Just as the child is in a role guided participation with parents, parents in the role of guided participation with their advisor. The objective of the consultant is to help parents to resume their role as the best guide in the lives of children, and to help them develop the skills and mindset necessary to make the most of moments with their child throughout the day. RDI ® does not contain a specific set of activities, done in a specific place, and for a period of time. It is a lifestyle that permeates every interaction with the child, and generally with other family members as well. Parents learn to approach their child and provide opportunities for thinking, communication, and bearing in order to promote the optimal growth and development.
There is much more to say about RDI ® as a method of treatment, but the purpose of this paper is give you a basic overview. You now have an initial framework for understanding the key elements of RDI ® and the innovative approach to treatment neurodevelopmental disorders it provides.
