Autism Potty Training Tips
Dose any have any good tips for potty training a 4 year old boy with autism?
He showed an interest in the pot that I bought for him, but when I sat on it, it dosent do anything. So I handed him hidden in layers and you may probibly guess what happens.
Try tracking. The first thing every morning to put on the pot. Within minutes, he will have his biggest pee of the day. While it is pee cue him making a noise (pssst), signature toiletries ASL or verbally "you piss!" or all three. After this for a few weeks, sitting on the toilet will be a benchmark to pee. He will be able to free pee voluntarily. Then you can begin a gradual approach of toilet training. Take a day or two and watch your son and to learn when it is more likely to need to pee / poop (first thing in the morning, every 20-30 minutes in the morning, after his nap, before the bath / bed, etc..) Start taking a quick opportunity to pot those moments each day. Use your signal when you put it on the toilet so he can go pee / poop. Just do the normal routine and do not emphasize training on cleanliness. Finally, its layers will be quite dry between pottytunities. Then switch to full-time underwear. Keep having regular pottytunities. A few days will be great, others not so much, but at some point you should start signaling reliably it must go or simply go on his own. Let it happen, but do not leave the pot offers regular opportunities immediately. Finally, it will start using either signaling or to take 100% of the time. Then you're done. Some children take more days only take weeks, some take months or a year. There is a wide spectrum of what is normal. Do not worry, do not force him to go, just continue to offer and support, with this method it will form the time is right for him.
